Based on my recipes published so far, the inclined reader should soon realize that a blender can take on many different tasks in the kitchen and than many people assume. A very typical example is the preparation of ice cream and sauces. Only a few people have the idea of using a blender for this. Therefore the idea of using a blender as a Food Processor is not so far-fetched.
As the title suggests, this article aims to show what possibilities the use of a blender in the kitchen offers and where its limits lie. It is clear that a lot can be done with a high-performance mixer. But it should not be overestimated either. For certain tasks in the kitchen it is perfectly adequate, but not for others.
What can I make with a Blender?
The exact possibilities of application in the home kitchen based on the different food categories are presented below. In addition, a brief description is always given how well a blender performs.
Smoothies: Fruit and vegetables are finely chopped in a short time, resulting in delicious smoothies. No other kitchen appliance can compete with this. Hence the maximum score of 5 out of 5 points. For smoothies, a smaller high-performance blender, such as the Bianco Primo with iPMS, is sufficient.
Juices: Strictly speaking, you can also get very good results in preparing juices. However, because the fruit pulp and possibly other fruit components are left behind, additional filtering is required. Understandably, the blender cannot do this, which increases the effort. Therefore, an extra boost is needed, so one point is deducted in the evaluation: 4 out of 5 points.
Sauces: Sauces look better again. It is even possible, without effort, to first sweat the ingredients in a pot and only then put them in the blender, which then cuts them into pieces and turns them into a finely creamy mass. Ranking: 5 out of 5 points.
Soups: In the case of soups, it depends entirely on whether they are prepared exclusively in the blender or if they are cooked as a supplement. The recipes also play a very important role, some are excellent to prepare in a blender, others are not. It also depends on how hot the blender is and how hot the soup can get. Rating: 4 out of 5 points.
Ice cream: Here the recipe is even more important than for soups. There are ice cream recipes that are comparatively easy to implement, while others require a lot of work. What is particularly attractive is the fact that, depending on the ice cream recipe, really impressive results can be achieved without an ice cream machine. But especially for inexperienced people, the preparation can be a challenge. Rating: 4 out of 5 points.
Nut Puree: Nut puree can be prepared in the blender in many different ways. But here too, a lot depends on experience and the respective recipe. Sometimes a lot of patience is needed, but the preparation is relatively laborious. Therefore, 2.5 out of 5 points.
My Criteria for Evaluation
Power: Power, i.e. the force that the engine develops and transmits to the mixing blades, is of great importance. A strong engine is worthwhile, especially with difficult mixtures such as ice cream. In general, the stronger the mixer, the better. However, it is not only the power of the motor in watts that is indicated by the manufacturer. The Bianco Gusto, for example, is stronger than the Puro, although the latter has a higher wattage rating. The reason for this is the technical application. Therefore, if you are looking for a really powerful mixer, you should not only pay attention to the technical specifications but also look into the real-world performance.
Mixer Jug: Two things are important for the mixer jug. First, there is the minimum volume that must be filled for the blender to work properly. Some containers are a little unfavorable in this regard because they require comparatively large amounts of ingredients. The flower container of the Bianco di puro, for example, is very special. I cannot recommend it for making smoothies, but I think it is unbeatable for crushing nuts.
Mixed products: Even the ingredients should not be ignored. Frozen fruit, for example, can be a real challenge. Therefore, it is sometimes recommended to let them thaw. Soaking them beforehand can also lead to better results with some ingredients. Therefore, if you want to use your blender as a food processor, you must know exactly what consistency is best for processing the individual ingredients.
Operation: Finally, there is the operation of the blender. It is not always advisable to let the appliance run at the maximum level. Depending on the food, it is sometimes more sensible to work deliberately at a low level. Mixing programs can also be helpful, but do not have to be.
